University House Members and Guests are invited to a Natural, Organic & Bio-dynamic Wine Masterclass presented by Prof. Geoff Scollary.
Natural wines have been receiving considerable attention in the wine media and elsewhere of late. The ‘for’ and ‘against’ camps are rather vocal in their support for or rejection of wines branded as ‘natural’. The difficulty would appear to be in the interpretation of natural wine terminology that is sometimes confused with organic and bio-dynamic.
This presentation will examine the terminology in the context of grape growing and wine making practices. Wines branded in each category will be presented to illustrate the different styles.
Research in wine chemistry led Geoff to take the oenology degree at Charles Sturt University graduating in 1992. He gained wine industry experience during and post this course. Appointed as the foundation professor of oenology at CSU in 1997, he was also the foundation director of the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre. Before moving from the University of Melbourne to CSU, Geoff was for some time a convenor of the University House Tasting Panel. Now in retirement, he writes a bimonthly ‘grapevine’ column for Chemistry in Australia.
